Restoration and Refurbishment of Old Valletta School of Art

Archimed Projects was the main contractor on the recently refurbished historical building that is the School of Art in Valletta, inaugurated by the Prime Minister of Malta Robert Abela and the Minister for Education Justyne Caruana.

The Malta School of Art is housed in an elegant old palazzo that originally belonged to a French knight in the Order of the Knights of St John before being passed on to the State. At one point, the grand building served as a Magistrate’s Court.

The refurbishment works on the €5 million project included the restoration of the building’s façade and the installation of a lift. The entire interior of the building required extensive restoration and refurbishment.

Since its establishment in 1926, the School of Art has produced a large number of renowned artists that have influenced the Maltese visual arts scene.

This project was successfully completed in spite of a number of complications brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic. A representative for Archimed Group said that being involved in such rehabilitation projects instils a sense of pride within the Group’s employees, as it shows a tangible contribution towards the upkeep of Malta’s heritage.
